Paris – The movable feast

Introduction

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” – Ernest Hemingway

The movable feast that is Paris is home to over 2 million people, and you too can experience the exquisite Parisian lifestyle! As a top tourist destination, Paris is full of attractions, both historical and novel. You can spend your day immersing yourself  in the cultural history of the Left Bank and the ancient Latin Quarter, or stroll along the Champs-Élysées and Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where many of the luxury fashion houses that Paris is famed for are located.

Whether you are headed for the famed museums located in the city, the sublimely gothic Notre Dame de Paris, the artist’s mecca, Montmarte, or Paris Fashion Week, you will end your day of sightseeing the same way: enjoying delicious gourmet cuisine and desserts at one of the local cafes, bistros, patisseries, or even open-air marchés. No matter what your interests are, Paris has something to offer you.

Training Center

Training takes place in the Opera district, Boulevard Haussmann, which is a worldwide recognized location. It is situated opposite to Galeries Lafayette, close to Paris’ national Opera, hotels, restaurants with easy access to transportation.

The 4-Week TEFL Course

You must complete the 40-hour online TEFL preparatory course at least 1-week before you arrive in France. This means you will have completed most of the grammar and theory modules before you arrive in Paris so that you can focus on the more practical aspects of the course while you’re here, such as teaching practice with students at a local school.

Our 4-week TEFL course is fully accredited and certified to meet international standards. The training involves up to 6 hours of observed teaching practice and 120 hours of classroom instruction. You will acquire the practical skills to teach English as a foreign language in any country around the world.

Classes run Monday to Friday, 9-4pm. Weekends are free to explore the local area but you will have homework assignments.

Accommodation

Once you have confirmed your place on the TEFL course, we will assist you with booking your accommodation. There is no shortage of accommodation choices in Paris to suit your budget.

Getting Here and Visas

We recommend you arrive in France at least 2 days prior to the course start date. Students should arrive on a tourist visa and then we will advise on how to obtain a business visa and work permit once you find an employer.

Prospects for Teachers

Teaching English for room and board is very widespread and is normally arranged on the spot.

There is also a bustling market in freelance teaching as schools can be reluctant to take on contract teachers for whom they would be obliged to make expensive contributions for social security. Self-employed workers register at the social security office. Telephone and internet teaching positions are popular for their convenience and anonymity.

Conditions of Work

Language schools that teach business English often expect you to drive, perhaps even your own car, so that you can give lessons in offices and private homes.

Salaried teachers should be covered by a nationally agreed and widely enforced Convention Collectif, which makes stable contracts, sick pay, holiday pay, etc. An unusual feature in France is that some schools calculate the salary according to a certain number of teaching hours per 9 or 12 months, and will pay overtime for hours worked in excess of this. Expect to earn over $1,500 per month for a normal 40 hour week.
