Info by Louro & Tiago Inc. Attorneys and Notaries

In order to authenticate a document which has been signed or originated in South Africa, and which document is required for use outside of South Africa, one has to ask the following question:

Is the country in which the document is to be used a member country of  The Hague Convention?

a)   Yes, then the document must be certified by a notary public who in turn attaches an Apostille to the document and sends the Apostille for signature by the Registrar of the High Court. This takes 24 hours and this firm charges R 850,00 plus VAT. (Excluding courier costs)

b)   No, then after the above process,  you would need to personally (or agent) take the document to the authentication department at DIRCO in Pretoria who in turn attaches another Certificate by DIRCO about the signing power of the Registrar of the High Court and the fact that such Registrar is allowed to sign this document in South Africa for use outside of South Africa.
